Sanyo EC-510 10-Cup Rice Cooker and Vegetable Steamer

Sanyo rice cooker
This 10 cup rice cooker from Sanyo is a reliable efficient inexpensive model that gets the job done. This is the second one I have had and have given one to my son to make rice. As long as you follow the instructions by using the measuring cup that comes with and filling to appropriate water level marked on the inside of the cooking pot, the Japanese short-medium grain rice turns out perfect everytime. Of course you must rinse the rice with water about three times until the rinse water is not milky.

Simple & versatile
I've had more expense rice cookers, but this is my favorite. You push the button, it somehow cooks until the grain absorbs the water and then switches to a warmer mode. I use this to cook everything from barley to black-eyed peas to split pea soup. I set it, press the button and go about my business --- for the more hardy legumes, I do need to occasionally walk by, give a stir and add water, but it's still much faster and easier than cooking them on the stove. I was very annoyed when I tried fancier rice cookers with all their modes and programs. They were just too "smart" and either burned my delicate grains or switched off before my legumes were done. I didn't like the way they cook brown rice as well either: It took longer and wasn't as good. Some rice cookers have a hinged lid that is very hard to clean. This is a better design.

A couple hints: 1. Don't leave anything except white rice on the warmer mode for very long. White rice will stay lovely for hours...
